About the Event
Though the men’s heavy athletics has existed for centuries, women did not begin competing in this region until the late 1990s. Even so, as recently as 2015 the women’s heavy athletic division did not exist as part of a number of larger Highland Games, including the famous Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Women’s competitions have grown and now include an elite class with athletes on par with the men’s professional class, and they exist for a range of ages at the Masters Worlds Championships (athletes 40+). Several of our SAWS members have become ‘heavily’ involved in the sport, even before there was a women’s competition in our region. During this Dames & Drams two of our members and their fellow atheletes will join us from on location at an actual competition (it promises to be a bit chaotic).
