About the Event

Though the men’s heavy athletics has existed for centuries, women did not begin competing in this region until the late 1990s.  Even so, as recently as 2015 the women’s heavy athletic division did not exist as part of a number of larger Highland Games, including the famous Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Women’s competitions have grown and now include an elite class with athletes on par with the men’s professional class, and they exist for a range of ages at the Masters Worlds Championships (athletes 40+).  Several of our SAWS members have become ‘heavily’ involved in the sport, even before there was a women’s competition in our region. During this Dames & Drams two of our members and their fellow atheletes will join us from on location at an actual competition (it promises to be a bit chaotic). They’ll explain the different competitions and let you know the steps you can take to becoming a Highland games athlete. RSVP here or to ScottishWomenDC@gmail.com to receive a Zoom link to this next Dames & Drams.  If you are unable to join us for Dames and Drams, please find your local Highland Games and check athletics out, including at the upcoming www.vascottishgames.org.

====================================================================

Dames & Drams is our recurring networking event scheduled for the second Saturday of each month from 2:00-4:00 PM. The location for our gatherings varies.  Some gatherings are, once again, in person, while we continue to hold others virtually in order to stay in touch with the members that are located throughout the United States or traveling for work or pleasure.  Dames & Drams is open to anyone interested in learning more about their Scottish heritage or SAWS. Maybe considering membership?  This is a great way to meet existing members, ask questions conerning our activities, and to share your interests. Though RSVPs are not mandatory for our Dames & Drams events, it helps us with planning and to let our meet-up venues know how many to expect.  RSVP here or send an email to ScottishWomenDC@gmail.com if you would like to attend an upcoming Dames & Drams. Hope to see you soon!!
